Description
When you begin to talk about the ‘Greatest’, particularly in the world of Football, where better to start than the immortal George Best!
Statistics have been reeled out regarding George ever since he made his debut for Manchester United at Old Trafford, against West Bromwich Albion on 14th September 1963. What those statistics can never portray, is the immense pleasure that he has given to countless fans around the world, who will hold visual memories of a true genius at work. He was idolised at Old Trafford as part of the famous Best, Law, Charlton trio. He went on to play 470 times for the The Red Devils, scoring 179 times, a remarkable return for a “winger”.
The truly great Pele was quoted, more than once, as saying that “George Best was the greatest player in the world”. That quote needs no further reflection!! George was one of very few players down the years, who fans would truly pay the admission fee to see alone!
Born in Belfast on 22nd May 1946, his adored parents Dickie and Anne, could not have bestowed a more relevant surname on George, than “Best”. On the pitch, George was mercurial, balanced, gifted, majestic, brave, quick, the testimonial go on and on! With the possible exception of the great Danny Blanchflower, George was undoubtably the best ever player to pull on a Northern Ireland Jersey, playing for his country 37 times and scoring 9 goals.
It could be said that Georges’s greatest skill was to leave an indelible, unforgettable memory in the minds of all who had the immense pleasure to see him play. GEORGE BEST, truly one the Greatest of all time.
